Streaming Habits Human-Centered Design Interviews

Understanding the Streaming Habits of Young Adults

Project Type: Graduate School Project for Human-Centered Design Class.

Timeline: October 2021.

Role: Discussion Guide Writer, Interviewer, Observer, Presenter.

Project Description: This research aims to understand the streaming habits and preferences of young adults in order to determine points of friction and what has made streaming a success. In doing this, we interviewed streaming users, asking them icebreaker, attitude, behavior and preference-related questions. Interviewees agreed that content quality is key, and routine and reliability are at the heart of their content selection process.

Challenge: Through these interviews we sought to (1) Understand brand associations and sentiments towards different platforms; (2) Discover how people choose to stream, what they watch and when; (3) Uncover overall preferences and beloved genres. Ideally, these interviews would be conducted in person in order to make detailed observations of the environment, etc. Due to the pandemic, they were conducted via zoom, causing us to have to get creative to keep participants engaged and able to answer all of our questions.

Solution: Due to the constraints of Zoom interviews, we remained flexible as a team and had to change certain aspects of our previously outlined activities or questions in order to make the experience more meaningful for our participants and insightful for us.

Lessons Learned: Anticipate possible issues with activity, and technical difficulties if conducting interviews online; When there are pauses in the conversation, resist the urge to fill the silence as that could create the opportunity for leading statements; Iterate upon issues with previous interviews to improve the flow of the next one; Interview times (AM vs. PM) will affect the mood/vibe.
